I do not see how FFXI can survive with FFXIV. If the FFXIV was not a final fantasy game maybe, but it is and will destroy XI.
People who are dedicated to FFXI know that they do not want to get behind on FFXIV content.
And people who play FFXI causually will have no reason to keep playing.
I can see a few people who were not able to obtain some items from botted NM's staying for a little, but probably not for long.

You'd be surprised how many people aren't moving.
"I've spent too much time in XI to move" is a common response.
Sure the XI population will go down, but it won't get killed. Hell, what if XIV is a bust? Everyone's back to XI.

honestly i dont understand why people dont want to migrate, i mean unless ffxiv is a shitty mmo, but seriously ive seen some people who felt like there gonna die if they switch games even though they can still make a similar character
and no im not exaggerating hehe
It's Not Just A Game, It Is a Reality.

I guess they feel a 'bond' between them and their characters. I don't. I know that Haseyo is just a little pixel Tarutaru. I want new, so I'm going to XIV, as long as it doesn't really fail.

They aren't very dedicated if they are worrying about keeping up with the content of another game haha

I hope it doesn't turn final fantasy fans against each other. my ff mmo is better than your ff mmo. if that happened it would be even harder for SE to make a 3rd FF mmo.
I think it would be in SE's best interest to try and get as many people from ffxi to fall in love with ffxiv as possible.

Spending too much time on XI is not a reason to stay longer but a reason to enjoy a new experience. I think the people staying for that reason expect XIV to be a carbon copy of XI.

Yeah people are expecting a FFXI v2.0. Like when they dicuss the wants and do not wants in XIV, they mention a bunch of from XI. This is completely different and new. c.c

The whole "No more exp" thing should make this somewhat different, lol.

Never know with SE, I'm really wondering about the no exp nonsense. They never really for sure said there won't be levels, but if there isn't, wha..I just have no idea how they're gonna make it work. We need more info before I hurt someone.

And they pulle dit off damn well. I actually have not had any time to read this no xp chit chat, but i dont care. I play FFXI almost 50/50 half for talking and socializing with my friends and linkshell, and the other just to play a fun game. Im not letting anyone not switch to FFXIV, i find that really silly. but yeah if it is aweful, then sure ima prolly go back to ffxi... But i dont plan for it to be aweful.
Its like Halo 1, 2 and 3... I cant belive people still play 1 & 2... I mean, i went back onto 2 just for nostalgia.. Not to actually "play". With MMO's i mean, you kinda just have to migrate... SE own's all of our souls anyway, were obligated to follow the shepard

Ultima Online is still going on strong and it's been decades since its initial release. The original Everquest is going to get a new expansion, its sixteenth. As long as people will support FFXI, it'll still be around. Quit being so pessimistic.

FFXIV will not be a sequel.I cannot guarantee it 100%. But if you look back how many sequels any final fantasy game has had.How many do you count? And by sequel I mean, Character's carry over, battle systems, etc...

They said that they're going to make it the best Final Fantasy game ever made, and you can't do that if you're going to reuse previous systems. It'll be completely different. They have removed experience points to begin with, so that should give you a message on what they're (SE) trying to do.

The only way I could see FFXI surviving this would be if FFXIV is completely different. Now, they have claimed that it will be, but the trailer has shown us races that we are familiar with so the similarities have already begun.

Honestly, the fact that the character models are identical and the developer comment that this was to make it easy for people to transfer from FFXI > FFXIV means they are ready to end FFXI.

Final Fantasy Tactics series? 8D
Really, though. FFXI won't die, and here's my take on why...
FFXI has been around for a long time. If you've played for a number of years, you're not about to suddenly drop all your hard work and move on. FFXI also has easier-to-accomplish system requirements. In a year's time, even if Quad-Core processors and Windows 7 are more common, getting a computer that has a single-core processor and windows XP will probably be a lot cheaper.

Well as we know next to nothing about FFXIV apart from a whole bucket load of speculation. We don't know how FFXIV will play or anything concrete about its mechanics. Hell at the moment this whole forum is 99.9% speculation (I don't mean any offence to the forum creators/users as I am sure things will improve over time.)
A lot of people have great faith in SE (which is a good thing) but I for one will prefer to wait for something more solid before I make any choice on what I will do. At this stage with so little information it is foolish to say that FFXI will die when FFXIV is released.
